The purpose of this tour is to explain in detail the Field of Miracles.
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption (XIth century) opens the
great chapter of Pisan architecture. The body of the church is enormous,
and the façade embodies the Pisan-Romanesque style. The interior
contains Giovanni Pisano’s Pulpit and Galileo Galileo’s Lamp, while the
apse is dominated by a great mosaic representing the Redeemer Enthroned,
the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist, this last, work of
Cimabue.
In front of the Duomo, the visit continues with the explanation of the
Baptistery, where the Pulpit sculpted by Nicola Pisano and the
Baptismal
Font are both located.
The Baptistery’s acoustics are unique, creating a multiple echo effect
so, during the visit, there will be a delightful “acoustic demonstration”.
Our walking tour leads us to the next monument, the Leaning Tower. At
55m high (179 feet) and at an inclination of 5° in a southern direction,
the bell tower causes disbelief in visitors but so many worries to
Pisans!
The end is devoted to the Monumental Cemetery, which consists of
a long rectangular arcade enclosing a large central lawn with the earth
from Calvary (i.e., Jerusalem). The lateral four corridors hold numerous
sarcophagi, classical sculptures and, in the Hall of Frescoes, “The Triumph of the Death” by
Buonamico Buffalmacco.
This visit, according to your interests, takes from 1 to 3
hours. |
